Hunter’s Moon…

I actually managed to sleep way beyond the urgent early morning tug my Mac and work seem to have on me. Well… for a couple of days at least. I think it may have had to do with the sound of light rain falling and the sense I always feel, when it does, that the world is “right as rain”.

In that I find a little peace. And a little rest.

Something else happened yesterday that was as right as rain… A friend, who had to choose a path very few of us would ever dare, gave birth to a daughter. The story is an African story – from the tragedy of pain and darkness there springs forth the rarest of beauties. The most beautiful of skies always follow the scariest of storms and knowing that gives us hope.

For a mother that colours way outside the lines and for a daughter that gives us hope… This poem:

HUNTER’S MOON

Do not assume that you enter this space
and need not bow,
for before you is a princess of Africa.
And do not assume that Africa is not in her soul
and the connection not intertwined.

The lioness, the leopard, Orion.
Earth, water and fire.
Beat in her veins and fill up her soul.
She beats in our hearts and fills up our days.

For she has suckled the breast of a survivor
who braved a lonely but necessary path,
And for those of us who hope
We welcome the Hunter’s Moon.

  1. I like it. the capture of a proud heritage and people that is the cradle of mankind resonates in your piece. If you have time I’d like to invite you to 1markt.wordpress.com and I would appreciate any comment you wish to make
